Since June 2024, a mattress preservation collection initiative run by Ecomaison, in partnership with Envie Recyclage Bretagne and Veolia, has been underway on the Route du Meuble in Rennes, a major commercial hub for home furnishings.
The experiment meets a dual challenge: to simplify and improve the collection of used mattresses for distributors, while optimizing their recycling/reducing the carbon impact of transport. This system enables resources to be pooled and logistics flows to be better managed, reducing both costs and environmental impact.
Preserving mattresses: a shared collection point for greater efficiency
This pilot project involves setting up a centralized collection point at the Envie Recyclage Bretagne site(28 rue de la Janais, 35520 La Mézière). This strategic site is dedicated to Ecomaison member stores and deliverers. It enables used mattresses and furniture to be deposited directly at the Envie Recyclage Bretagne mattress dismantling center.
In addition, a dedicated skip is provided free of charge by Ecomaison for used furniture, simplifying logistics for distributors. Specific containers are also available for cardboard, plastic and polystyrene packaging, thanks to a partnership with Veolia, which makes these containers available so that there is only one drop-off point (including packaging) for professionals on the furniture route, an important asset for the success of this drop-off point.
Benefits for distributors :
- Reduce logistics constraints with a single depot for mattresses, furniture and packaging;
- Proximity of stores to their customers;
- Reduced storage space on their site;
- Contributing to a more sustainable supply chain.
Preserving mattress quality for environmentally-friendly recycling
To guarantee efficient recycling, it is essential to preserve the quality of the materials collected. Tarpaulin-covered carts are used to protect mattresses from the elements, while special bags for comforters and pillows ensure maximum recyclability.
These measures provide Envie's dismantling unit with a higher-quality deposit, while limiting the waste of resources.
Information
Mattress collection: reduced carbon impact and environmental benefits
By collecting mattresses and furniture directly, without the need for intermediary sorting centers or landfill sites, this system reduces the carbon impact of transport. This model also contributes to streamlining logistics flows and maximizing environmental gains for all stakeholders.
A project that is already bearing fruit
With almost 5 tonnes of mattresses and 7 tonnes of furniture collected since the start of the experiment, the scheme has proved a success. Local retailers such as La Maison du Matelas, La Maison de la Literie and Mr Meuble are actively participating in the project, demonstrating the growing support of professionals for the scheme.
Improvements are already being studied, including the extension of opening hours (currently from 8am to 4pm - site opening hours) to better meet the needs of deliverers, and the duplication of this model in other regions if the results are confirmed.
