Turning residual waste into renewable, low-carbon gases is one of the solutions of the future. It creates a new stratum in the pyramid of waste treatment hierarchies, enabling waste to be recovered in the form of easily transportable and storable energy, as well as in the form of raw materials for the chemical industry. To accelerate the industrialization of these innovative technologies and the development of associated projects for the production of renewable, low-carbon gases "made in France", the partners will be working together to build a platform of complementary, multi-expertise service offerings.

Through this initiative, the partners wish in particular to contribute their expertise:

  • local authorities and waste recycling associations, and any other economic player with waste to be recycled;
  • technology developers working across the entire value chain, from the pre-treatment of residues and waste to the production and valorization of synthetic methane;
  • production project developers and managers, design offices, development and construction architects...

The aim of this protocol is to define a scope of services over the next few months, and to devise ways of implementing and making them available, in accordance with a number of key principles:

  • facilitate support for technology and project developers, and promote the visibility of sectors and the associated value chain;
  • favour a rapid, direct operational approach;
  • broad access to all players and technologies.

At this stage, the partners intend to offer services around 3 value propositions:

  • Assessing, qualifying and supporting the mobilization of waste resources and deposits;
  • Supporting the development of projects to exploit local resources;
  • Support for technology industrialization.

Convinced of the usefulness of this platform in accelerating the industrialization of these technologies, decarbonizing the French gas mix through local production and strengthening the circular economy, the partners are giving themselves until 2023 to confirm their hypotheses and its feasibility.

About GRTgaz

GRTgaz is Europe's 2nd largest gas transporter, with 32,500 km of pipeline and 640 TWh of gas transported. The company has 3,000 employees and generated sales of nearly 2.3 billion euros in 2020. GRTgaz's raison d'être is "Together, making a secure, affordable and climate-neutral energy future possible". GRTgaz is an innovative company undergoing major transformation to adapt its network to the ecological and digital challenge, and is committed to a 100% carbon-neutral French gas mix by 2050. It supports the hydrogen and renewable gas sectors (biomethane and gas from solid and liquid waste). GRTgaz carries out public service missions to guarantee safe gas supply to its 945 customers (shippers, distributors, industrial companies, power plants and biomethane producers). With its subsidiaries Elengy, Europe's leading LNG terminal operator, and GRTgaz Deutschland, operator of the German MEGAL transmission system, GRTgaz plays a key role on the European scene. The company exports its know-how internationally, in particular the services developed by its RICE research center. Find us on https://www.grtgaz.com/, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instragram and Facebook.

About Citeo

Citeo is a company with a mission created by companies in the consumer goods and distribution sectors to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging and paper, by offering them solutions for reduction, reuse, sorting and recycling. To respond to the ecological emergency and accelerate the transition to a circular economy, Citeo has set itself 5 commitments: to reduce the environmental impact of its customers' products by anchoring the circular economy and eco-design in their practices and strategies; to create the conditions for building the solutions of today and tomorrow that combine environmental and economic performance; to provide consumers with the keys to reducing the environmental impact of their consumption; to co-construct and promote the company's solutions and positions, from local to international scale; to cultivate the commitment of its employees in the service of its mission. Since the creation of Citeo, consumer goods and retail companies have invested more than 11 billion euros to develop eco-design, install and finance selective collection and create recycling channels, with their partners in local authorities, channels and operators. Today, 68% of household packaging and 60.5% of paper are recycled, thanks to the sorting gesture of the French, which has become the first eco-citizen gesture.

About Syctom :

Syctom, the metropolitan household waste agency, is the public body responsible for treating and recycling the waste produced by 6 million inhabitants of 82 communes (Paris and inner suburbs), i.e. 10% of the French population. Every year, 2.3 million tonnes of waste are processed. In a context of increasing scarcity of raw materials and energy transition, all this waste must be considered as a resource. This is a daily challenge for Syctom, which is always on the lookout for innovations to optimize the performance of its facilities (improved sorting and recycling processes, increased energy efficiency) and find solutions to reduce the quantities of waste to be treated.
