In response to the imperatives of energy transition, resource sovereignty, and the decarbonization of industry, Ecomaison—the state-approved eco-organization for household products and items—announces the launch of a groundbreaking initiative structured around three pillars. Through a request for proposals, a call for innovation partnerships, and a call for expressions of interest, Ecomaison aims to optimize the preparation, material recovery, and energy recovery of the 360,000 metric tons of recoverable waste it collects each year through its four waste streams.
Building a Self-Sufficient French Industry
Ecomaison’s goal is to identify new industrial partners and develop a high-performing French industry capable of transforming large volumes of recoverable waste into high-quality resources. To achieve this goal, Ecomaison is launching three simultaneous initiatives, for which applications are open through September 21, 2026, with contracts set to begin on January 1, 2027.
1. A Request for Proposals (RFP) focused on proven energy recovery solutions
Ecomaison already supplies nearly 360,000 metric tons of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) per year to various cement plants and power plants in Europe and France. To strengthen this network, this call for bids is aimed at manufacturers offering the preparation and/or supply of RSM to energy recovery facilities that are already operational or scheduled to begin operations within a maximum of 18 months. Ecomaison commits to contracts ranging from 2 to 6 years, guaranteeing a stable supply through minimum volume commitments.
2. A Call for Innovation Partnerships (IP) for Recycling and Material Recovery
In order to reduce the volume of waste sent to incineration and promote more sustainable recycling or material recovery cycles, Ecomaison is seeking alternative solutions aimed at improving material extraction. This program is intended for innovators with projects in the final stages of development (minimum technology readiness level TRL 7). Ecomaison’s goal is to provide them with financial support to help them take the final steps toward full-scale industrialization (TRL 9).
3. A Call for Expressions of Interest (CEI) to create new combustion capacity
Recognizing the current limitations of the infrastructure, Ecomaison aims to develop “turnkey” projects for new energy recovery facilities for municipal solid waste (limited to 19.9 MWth). These projects may involve the construction of new “greenfield” facilities or the modernization of existing facilities to adapt them for municipal solid waste.
Fabien Cambon, Director of Purchasing, Innovation, and Performance at Ecomaison, emphasizes the urgency of this initiative:
“The situation is simple and straightforward. The French CSR sector faces a shortfall in consumption capacity relative to its production capacity. Our strategy is therefore to develop new CSR energy recovery capacity in France to bridge this gap. This call for expressions of interest will enable project developers to create CSR combustion units fueled by the volumes of CSR produced from Ecomaison recoverable waste.”
