As of January 1, 2022, the French Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy (AGEC) law will lead to major changes: distributors will be obliged to take back used furniture from their customers. Eco-mobilier is seeking to strengthen its network of reception points, and is launching a call for applications, which can be sent continuously to Ecomobilier.

Paris, September 29, 2021 - Eco-mobilier is the eco-organization approved by the public authorities to manage the collection, sorting, recycling and energy recovery of all used furniture, furnishings and fixtures, as well as to promote their reuse. To date, Eco-mobilier has collected over 3 million tonnes of used furniture, 95% of which is recycled, and is aiming for ZERO waste for furniture by 2023.

Implementation of the anti-waste law for a circular economy

Mandatory take-back of used products by retailers is one of the measures of the Anti-Waste for a Circular Economy (AGEC) law, which comes into force from January 2022.

Furniture and bedding distributors will be obliged to take back their customers' used furniture and mattresses free of charge. This service will have to be offered by stores of over 200 m2 or during deliveries, on the occasion of the purchase of similar goods. Stores with a sales area in excess of 1,000 m2 will be required to offer a free trade-in service. E-commerce is also affected: retailers and Internet vendors will be required to offer a no-cost trade-in. Before the sale is concluded, all retailers and websites will have to inform their customers of the trade-in conditions, either in-store, on delivery, or by dropping them off at a local collection point.

Strengthening the network of WEEE reception points

Eco-mobilier currently has a network of 130 reception points, and would like to strengthen its local network to help its members meet their new obligations. The aim is to have a denser network of reception points, so as to be able to offer a local solution to furniture and bedding retailers and their delivery networks.

To be eligible, partners must have the regulatory capacity to accept non-hazardous waste (volume 30m3), and be equipped with an approved scale for weighing waste. Contracts will be for one year, renewable.
