Ecomaison has just obtained its first ISCC Plus certification. This is the culmination of a dozen years of structuring the mattress industry and is a real asset for the development of the market for recycled materials from used mattresses.

What is ISCC Plus certification?

ISCC Plus certifies the traceability of recycled materials. It is one of the most demanding and internationally recognized certification systems for material traceability. It is particularly important in the world of chemical recycling and synthetic materials. Ecomaison has obtained this certification for the entire value chain of used mattresses, from their collection and sorting to their preparation and supply of recycled polyurethane foam. This certification guarantees that Ecomaison has excellent control over the management of all the mattress flows it handles.

"Ecomaison is one of only two eco-organizations in Europe to be ISCC Plus certified for part of its activities. A guarantee of quality and reliability, this certification demonstrates our complete mastery of the processes we use and our ability to provide and guarantee end-to-end traceability for the waste we handle."

Fabien Cambon, Technical Director of Innovation at Ecomaison

What are the challenges for Ecomaison?

With this certification, obtained at the end of January 2026, Ecomaison is anticipating the arrival of the future European regulation on eco-design, scheduled for 2028-2029, which will strengthen traceability requirements for recycled materials. In a constant quest for circularity, this is a further step towards supporting an efficient closed loop from mattress to mattress. Eagerly awaited by manufacturers who wish to incorporate more recycled materials into their new products, this certification could, in the future, be extended to other waste materials handled by Ecomaison, such as textiles from furniture components.

And what are the advantages for the mattress industry?

With this certification, Ecomaison is giving a further boost to the entire used mattress recycling industry.

  • For consumers, this is a guarantee of confidence in the new product they are going to buy, just as when they sort their waste to dispose of their old mattress. The assurance that it will be treated properly and recycled!
  • For Ecomaison's partner waste operators, this is an opportunity to engage in a process of continuous improvement of their practices.
  • For recyclers, this is an asset for expanding their markets. They will be able to secure the origin of their recycled material supplies and the quality of their traceability, proving that they incorporate recycled material into their products. They will also be able to use this internationally recognized certification to communicate their commitment to sustainability (compliance with standards, recycled content of their products, etc.).
  • For mattress manufacturers who incorporate these recycled foams, it is also a powerful marketing argument. Depending on the recycled content of their products, they may also be eligible for certain bonuses or financial support offered by eco-organizations, in particular Ecomaison.
Mattress dismantling

A demanding certification

Three of the eight used mattress dismantling centers that partner with Ecomaison have so far been included in the scope of this Ecomaison certification. Certification of the other five may be rolled out at a later date. The highly demanding audit took place at the Ecomaison site and at Recyc Matelas Europe in Gargenville. Waste flows, output fractions, equipment used, storage areas, associated data management—everything was scrutinized!

"This certification is the result of nearly two years of work, in coordination with the polyurethane foam industry ecosystem and the ISCC. This work will then benefit other sectors and other eco-organizations, helping to advance recycling."

The ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) is an internationally recognized certification system that originated in Germany. An initial standard, ISCC EU, was created to comply with European regulations on renewable sourcing. The ISCC Plus label certifies the traceability of bio-based materials (ISCC bio) or waste materials (ISCC Circular). Ecomaison has obtained ISCC Plus Circular certification for the supply of polyurethane foam extracted from used mattresses.
